New research internships for South West health & care professionals

We’re collaborating with the NIHR Applied Research Collaboration South West Peninsula to offer a number of fully-funded internship opportunities to health and social care professionals in Cornwall, Devon and South Somerset.

Our programme is designed as an introduction to research, helping local staff to develop their careers whilst also benefiting the local population and services. The internships have been designed with the needs of demanding roles and work-life balance in mind, with each taking place over approximately 30 days (225 hours) taken flexibly over a 12-month period.

During the internship there will be the opportunity to develop research knowledge and skills through a multitude of ways, including:

  • Funding for a personalised training and development programme developed with your supervisor prior to commencement of the award
  • Regular meetings with an academic supervisor
  • Opportunities to work with local academics, contribute to a study or develop ideas
  • Opportunities to work on the delivery of local studies
  • Access to formal training such as a Master’s level research module at either the University of Exeter or Plymouth

Employing organisations will receive funding to cover employee participation in this internship.

Professor Vicki Goodwin, PenARC Academic Career Development Lead, said: “We are delighted to be able to offer these internships in collaboration with the Clinical Research Network. They are an ideal opportunity for those working in health and social care with no research experience to work as part of a research team and undergo some training and development.”

Dr Pauline McGlone, Deputy Chief Operating Officer, CRN SWP, said: “These roles offer the opportunity for staff to develop their research career pathway and develop key skills with joint support from the ARC and the CRN.”

We particularly welcome applications from:

  • People from ethnic minority backgrounds
  • People with lived experience of health or social care
  • Those interested in mental health, social care, primary care and public health, or an interest in under-served populations

Applications close at midday Friday 17th June 2022.
