Case study: David’s story: benefits of becoming a Research Champion

David Batchelor is a National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Clinical Research Network (CRN) East Midlands Research Champion. He first became involved in research at the young age of six after he was hit by a speeding car that caused him multiple life threatening injuries. Research saved his life as he underwent surgery involving a newly designed suture. Since this, he has volunteered his time and efforts to all things research. 

David kick started his role in healthcare in 2005 as a Citizens Council member for the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) where he informed guidelines on research in the NHS. Following this, he took part in the NIHR funded IMACE2 study, which investigated the use of Implantable Cardiac Defibrillators (ICDs) after a heart attack. Read the published article on IMACE2 here. At the same time, David joined the European Patient Ambassador Programme (EPAP) where he completed a course on clinical research led by the European Lung Foundation (ELF). From here on, David became a Research Champion for the NIHR, and also became a member of the Patient and Carer Engagement Group for the Leicestershire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG). With his new role as a Research Champion, David has had a say in the development of multiple projects such as the bid for the NIHR Patient Research Centre (PRC) in Leicester, and PPI (Patient and Public Involvement) lead for diabetes research. 

Currently, David has participated in multiple studies for mental health, dementia, renal, heart, and diabetes research. Within this, he is also the co-applicant on multiple studies, including MiFoot. With all of his experience in research, David continues to be part of PPI activities, with the hopes that he will make a difference for generations to come.
