Ask the Expert Webinar: Research into Oesophageal Cancer Prevention

This NIHR webinar invited members of the public to ask questions of a leading expert about the latest research into the prevention and early detection of oesophageal cancer.

Professor Rebecca Fitzgerald answered questions in the ‘Ask the Expert’ event on the evening of Tuesday 19 September 2023. Rebecca is Professor of Cancer Prevention at the University of Cambridge and Director of the Early Cancer Institute.

She has led ground-breaking research to detect oesophageal cancer earlier to improve outcomes for cancer patients.

The webinar was hosted by Liz Chipchase, who was diagnosed with early-stage oesophageal cancer when taking part in the BEST3 clinical trial. This was successfully treated, and she is certain that the trial saved her life.

Topics covered included the causes of oesophageal cancer, genetic predisposition, screening, symptoms, Barrett's oesophagus, current and future research, and how to get involved in research studies.
