Play provokes mental health research debate

The role of research in mental health care was discussed at a Q&A following a play about a clinical drug trial in Oxford.

The National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) supported the post-show Q&A at St Aldateā€™s Tavern on 28 March after a performance of The Effect.

The play, at Modern Art Oxford, follows a romance between two volunteers as they take part in a clinical drug trial, exploring whether their feelings are real or a side effect of the trial.

Marni Moran, Lead Research Nurse, NIHR Clinical Research Network Thames Valley and South Midlands joined stars Ashley Hunt and Alison Stibbe and Willem Kuyken, Director of the University of Oxford Mindfulness Centre.

They discussed the role of research in mental health care and questions from the audience included the impact of antidepressants, access to mental health services and experiences of depression.
