CRN Yorkshire and Humber Research Awards 2023 Winners and Highly Commended

Research teams from across Yorkshire and Humber came together in Leeds on Thursday 13 July 2023 to celebrate their achievements at the CRN Yorkshire and Humber Research Awards 2023.

The event recognised the research achievements of health and care staff and provided an opportunity for them to connect with colleagues and supporters.

Over 140 nominations were received across 12 categories, showcasing the best in research and innovation, with winners, and those recognised as highly commended, receiving awards or certificates at the event. 

The Research Award 2023 winners and highly commended individuals and teams are:

Early Career Researcher / Associate PI of the Year

  • WINNER - Dr Jake McCormick, The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust
  • HIGHLY COMMENDED - Claire Marshall, Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust

Principal Investigator of the Year

  • WINNER - Professor Dinesh Saralaya, Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

Chief Investigator of the Year

  • WINNER - Dr Michael Crooks, Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust
  • HIGHLY COMMENDED - Professor Sunil Bhandari, Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust; Professor Louisa Ells, Leeds Beckett University and Professor James Turvill, York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

 Research Practitioner of the Year

Research Allied Health Professional of the Year

  • WINNER - Catherine Kerr, Sheffield Health and Social Care NHS Foundation Trust
  • HIGHLY COMMENDED - Christine Comer, Leeds Community Healthcare NHS Trust and Dr Sean Pymer, Hull York Medical School and Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust

Research Nurse / Midwife of the Year

  • WINNERS - Rebecca Leon and Melanie Struthers, Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust
  • HIGHLY COMMENDED - Kerry Dooley, Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Born and Bred in Doncaster

Research Team of the Year

  • WINNERS - ED Research Team, Sheffield Children's NHS Foundation Trust
  • HIGHLY COMMENDED - James Alexander Family Practice, Hull

Alongside the awards ceremony, the event featured a welcome speech by Professor Chris Morley, Nominated Executive Director for CRN Yorkshire and Humber and a presentation from the Chair of the Partnership Group for CRN Yorkshire and Humber, Michele Moran. Liz Monaghan, a research champion, gave an inspiring talk about what led to her taking part in research and her experience of encouraging others to do so.
