CRN Greater Manchester nurses recognised for going the extra mile
Two of CRN Greater Manchester’s senior research nurses have been recognised for ‘going the extra mile’.
The “Going the Extra Mile” (GEM) awards are run each year by Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT).
MFT hosts CRN Greater Manchester and is responsible for ensuring the effective delivery of research throughout the region’s trusts, primary care organisations and other qualified providers.
The trust’s GEM awards provide an opportunity for patients, families, carers, and staff to identify individual nurses, midwives and allied health professionals who have gone the extra mile for others.
Matron Jo Henry and Team Lead Research Nurse Louise Woodhead were nominated by their CRN Greater Manchester colleagues and were then both named winners in the Research and Innovation division.
Jo was selected as winner in the category of Organisational Culture for her work in encouraging creativity and ownership in engaging diverse communities. This was an acknowledgment for all her and her team's work on studies delivered in the community such as Genes and Health.
Louise won in the category of Leadership in recognition of her strong leadership skills which have enabled her to become a natural in a senior management position and be a role model to team members. Louise also leads the team’s wellbeing group, helping to organise activities, events and sharing resources to engage all staff and promote health and wellbeing.

"I was shocked and absolutely delighted to receive this nomination, let alone be the winner for Research and Innovation. I was incredibly touched that the team took the time and effort to nominate me, especially for organisational culture which I pride myself on. I am regularly ‘blown away’ by the team’s passion for research and for their consideration for their colleagues, which has all contributed to the positive culture at the CRN GM.”
Louise Woodhead, CRN Greater Manchester Team Lead Research Nurse, said:
“I was so thankful for being nominated by the team, but to then win the Leadership category for Research and Innovation was amazing. I pride myself on leading by example and ensuring to lead our team cohesively, and to know the team feels the same way is very humbling. Thank you for this acknowledgement, and I will continue to lead the team in the best way possible.”
Janette Dunkerley, MFT Assistant Chief Nurse Research and Innovation and Director of Nursing for Clinical Research Network Greater Manchester and North West Coast, said:
"Myself and Ciaran Kilkelly, MFT Head of Nursing and Midwifery for R&I, were delighted to present Jo and Louise with their GEM awards as the R&I winners. Both received lovely nominations and the awards were very much deserved."
