Specialties

We support the delivery of health and care research in 31 specialty therapy areas. Each is overseen by a nominated Specialty Lead. These professionals lead research groups to promote and support research within their specialty across the region. If you would like to work with the Specialty Lead in your area, please get in touch via our Senior Management Team. 

Specialty Leads develop research activity within their area by encouraging local healthcare professionals to participate in NIHR Clinical Research Network Portfolio studies, building upon local strengths, and research interests, and priorities. They work with the designated member of the NIHR Clinical Research Network  North East and North Cumbria Senior Management Team to develop the local infrastructure to support research studies.

The Specialty Leads also support the dialogue between the life sciences industry and charities, and facilitate the involvement of patients and the public to make sure that research is relevant and effective. Find out about what is happening nationally in each specialty on the main NIHR website.
