Researcher Equality, Diversity and Inclusion training using forum theatre

Date: 29 February 2024
Time: 10:00 to 16:00

This training event is aimed at clinical and academic research staff who work with patients, research participants and members of the public and would like to learn more about Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI). The event is organised by the Clinical Research Network South London’s Inclusivity Panel and Health Action Training. The session will use unique and interactive approaches, including role play, forum theatre and applied drama in a safe and friendly environment.

We plan to achieve this by working together with clinical and academic research staff, members of the public and experts by experience to learn and share our experiences.

The day will focus on two under-served communities. First is the deaf community and second is research-hesitant members of the community. Throughout the day, we will work together to find ways of better communicating to build confidence for researchers in approaching and working with these communities in the future.

While the skills you learn on the day will be focused on working with patients, research volunteers and members of the public, they will also be useful for everyday interactions with colleagues, friends and family. We will also explore simple exercises in self-care, which are beneficial in any context.

During the event, we will explore how to engage with these two groups, identify some of the barriers that individuals from these groups face, and work together to find ways in which these barriers might be overcome through:

  • Compassion
  • Sensitivity
  • Knowledge
