Introduction to AcoRD for Research Delivery Staff

AcoRD stands for ‘Attributing the costs of health and social care Research and Development’, and is a framework for the NHS and other partners undertaking health related research to identify, attribute and recover the various costs associated with research in the NHS and social care.

This session is an introduction to the DHSC AcoRD guidance and how this is used to assign the costs for research to the appropriate category and how this is relevant to research delivery staff. This session will focus on how to interpret a SoECAT for study delivery purposes and not on the completion of a SoECAT. It is not limited to research running in the NHS - it is also applicable to research involving hospice, local authority and social care settings.

The course provides an overview of the basic principles of costs and cost attribution for clinical/health related research and, through some shared group activities, applying the principles to real life research studies. We’ll look at the guidance and consider the foundations of AcoRD, going through the cost categories with examples, how the attribution process is undertaken and how this impacts the delivery team. The session will also cover how the Clinical Research Network is involved with this process, along with other support that the CRN team can offer.
