Paid and flexible opportunities for healthcare staff 

To deliver COVID-19 vaccine trials in Wessex, we need a team of doctors, nurses, healthcare assistants, administrators, pharmacy and laboratory staff and many other supporting roles.

We have a range of paid and flexible opportunities available, whether you're currently employed in the NHS, returning to healthcare or coming out of retirement.

NHS experience is essential for all our clinical and medical roles. For our admin roles, NHS experience is desirable but not essential. To discuss the roles in detail, please contact a member of the Wessex COVID-19 Vaccine Hub team on comms.crnwessex@nihr.ac.uk.

Doctor

We need doctors to ensure the safe delivery of our trials. Activities undertaken by doctors will include:

  • Taking medical histories of research participants
  • Carrying out eligibility checks and physical examinations to ensure participants can join the trial
  • Providing medical cover for the trials 
  • Routine follow up visits post vaccination 
  • Symptomatic visits with research participants reporting potential Covid-19 symptoms

Senior nurse (Band 6 and 7)

Senior nurses are needed to oversee and lead our trials. Typical tasks undertaken include:

  • Consenting and randomising research participants to the trials
  • Vaccinating participants
  • Carrying out follow up visits with research participants

Nurse (Band 5)

Band 5 nurses will manage the day to day delivery of our trials. Tasks will include:

  • Chaperoning research participants throughout their trial visit, ensuring they are comfortable and have all the information they need.
  • Administering the vaccination
  • Post-dose observations with research participants
  • Venesection
  • Data entry
  • Carrying out symptomatic visits with research participants 

Pharmacist 

Pharmacists are needed to support the day to day delivery of our trials. Tasks will include: 

  • Receiving and receipting vaccine trial stock 
  • Checking and maintaining storage temperature conditions 
  • Working with the vaccine hub team to safely store and dispense vaccine trial stock
  • Advising on the destruction of used vials 

Clinical Trials Assistant (CTA), Clinical Research Practitioner (CRP) and Healthcare Assistant (HCA)

CTAs, CRPs and HCAs are needed to support the day to day delivery of our trials. Examples activities undertaken by these members of staff include:

  • Chaperoning research participants throughout their trial visit, ensuring they are comfortable and have all the information they need.
  • Data collection and entry
  • Venesection
  • Clinical observations
  • Symptom checking 

Administration

Admin staff are essential for the smooth running of our trials. Some of the tasks undertaken by admin staff can be carried out remotely from a home base. These are indicated in brackets below.

  • Scripted pre-screening telephone calls with potential research participants (remote role)
  • Booking appointments for research participants (remote role)
  • Managing our on site reception
  • Responding to enquiries
  • Preparing participant information packs
  • Running samples to and from the lab
  • Data entry

Trial manager
