Case study: "It plays a crucial role in elevating the quality of people's lives" — senior research nurse on the value of research

We're putting a spotlight on nurses, midwives and allied health professionals (NMAHPs) in research. In this piece, Marcelle Costa Marinho, a senior research nurse at the NIHR Clinical Research Network North West London, shares the story of her career. Marcelle is currently working as part of the Direct Delivery Team to embed research in community settings.

How did you first get involved in research?

Following the completion of my initial master's degree in Brazil, I was driven to explore the field of research to uncover potential opportunities. This led me to actively engage in research activities in Brazil for a couple of years.

In 2021 I ventured into the UK, embarking on a new chapter as a Research Nurse. The realm of healthcare research has proven to be both fulfilling and exciting, offering continuous learning and valuable experiences that I eagerly anticipate.

What skills do you think are needed for a career in research?

A career in research demands a versatile set of skills encompassing both technical proficiency and interpersonal abilities. As a Senior Research Nurse in the Direct Delivery Team, my role underscores the importance of a combination of hard and soft skills. On the technical front, expertise in tasks such as blood collection, ECG procedures, and vaccine administration is crucial. Simultaneously, soft skills such as effective communication for patient recruitment, empathy in obtaining consent, and adept collaboration with Local Authorities showcase the interpersonal aspect.

This balance ensures not only the successful execution of research tasks but also fosters meaningful engagement with diverse stakeholders, contributing to the overall success of the research endeavours.

Why do you believe research is important?

Research is essential. It plays a crucial role in elevating the quality of people's lives by fostering advancements and innovations that contribute to overall well-being and societal progress.

What are your plans and ambitions for the future?

My future aspirations include pursuing a PhD to deepen my expertise and securing a more advanced job position aligned with my professional goals.
