Two Hampshire consultants commended for outstanding leadership in research
Two NHS doctors from Hampshire have been commended by the The National Institute for Health Clinical Research Network (NIHR CRN) and Royal College of Physicians (RCP) for their outstanding leadership in research.
Dr Hermione Price, Consultant Diabetologist from the Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust (SHFT) and Dr Richard Balasubramaniam, Consultant Cardiologist from University Hospitals Dorset (UHD) will be presented their awards at a special ceremony in London on Wednesday 20 October.
Within the nomination criteria, applicants were asked to outline their contribution to the delivery of NIHR research studies, with a particular focus on clinical leadership, as well as the engagement with patients to share new opportunities for participating in clinical research.
Richard Balasubramaniam, Consultant Cardiologist, University Hospital Dorset NHS Foundation Trust said:
"I am thrilled to have been recognised by the NIHR and RCP for my work in supporting and leading cardiology research across Wessex. In recent years my key focus has been on increasing the number of patients recruited to cardiology research studies across the region. I am proud to see that this work has paid off in that our Trust and the Wessex region is making a significant contribution to the research picture nationally.
“I would like to thank my colleagues who have been working tirelessly over the pandemic to continue their cardiology research portfolio alongside supporting COVID-19 research, including the vaccine trials at the Dorset Research Hub.”
Dr Hermione Price, Consultant Diabetologist and Honorary Senior Lecturer at the SHFT in Southampton said:
"I am honoured to have received this award and to have been recognised for my work towards building diabetes research over the past seven years. I am proud to have embedded a culture of research within the clinical diabetes service and am confident that this will only continue.
“Thank you to my team for their incredible commitment to improving diabetes research and for rising to any challenges with great enthusiasm. It is humbling to be a part of such a fantastic team in a growing area of research.”
Professor Ramesh Arasaradnam, Royal College of Physicians Academic Vice President, said:
“It’s been a real privilege to witness the high level of research set by my colleagues and RCP is proud to be supporting them. Truly it’s a testament of how to embed research within clinical practice. Many congratulations.”
