Thousands of South West Clinical Research Participants Changing The Face Of Healthcare

Thousands of South West Clinical Research Participants Changing The Face Of Healthcare

Last year (2019/2020) 23,329 participants participated in National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) studies across the South West Peninsula (Cornwall, Devon, and Somerset).

The region supported 638 studies in over 30 specialty areas Every NHS Trust, 47% of General Practices and Livewell, (a Plymouth social Enterprise) in the region actively contributed to delivering health and social research to improve patient care.

NIHR annual research statistics are published each year and provide the most comprehensive set of data available on the state of clinical research in England.  The newly released data from the National Institute for Research, Clinical Research Network – South West Peninsula (NIHR CRN SWP) has revealed how thousands of patients, healthy volunteers and medical professionals are working together to change the face of healthcare through research.

The latest data revealed today (Wednesday 1/7/2020) shows how in the financial year 2019/20  thousands of patients and healthy volunteers answered the call to ‘be part of research’ and work with researchers to gain vital insights to provide valuable knowledge to help people live healthier and better lives now and in the future.

Nationally a total of 732,176 participants took part in NIHR CRN supported studies in the 2019/20 financial year, taking the total number of participants recruited to NIHR CRN studies over the last 5 years to 3,599,944

Patients from 100% of NHS trust across England took part in NIHR CRN supported research this year – for the second year running. Hundreds of thousands of people across the country have given their time to improve healthcare for others and without their commitment, vital health and social research that changes lives simply could not happen.

Pauline McGlone, Chief Operating Officer, NIHR Clinical Research Network South West Peninsula, said:

“We take this opportunity to reflect on the contribution and achievements made by the organisations researchers and research participants across the region. We are delighted that staff, patients and members of the public across the region have given their time to improve health and care through their support and commitment to research.  . I would like to say a sincere thank you to everyone that has participated and supported research across the region”.

Chief Executive Officer of the NIHR Clinical Research Network, Dr William van’t Hoff said:

“I am delighted to see strong results of research delivery, reflecting the tremendous amount of work from many different staff based throughout our entire regional networks and in all healthcare settings. The NIHR CRN is truly showing its reach and opportunity to help researchers and patients across the whole country.”
