Study on the impact of COVID-19 during pregnancy and beyond will be led from North West London

A study aiming to understand the impact of COVID-19 on new mothers and their babies will be led by Imperial College London, with lead support from the NIHR Clinical Research Network (CRN) North West London.

The study, called PAN-COVID (Pregnancy and Neonatal outcomes for women with COVID-19), will result in a global database detailing a number of outcomes.

Clinical case reports from around the world will be collected and continually updated. Researchers will explore the impact of COVID-19 on miscarriage, pre-term delivery, fetal growth restriction and stillbirth, and transmission from mother to baby.

"The launch of the PAN-COVID study shows some of the NIHR research community at its best."

Alison Perry is one of the trial’s Project Managers. She is also a Research Champion at the CRN North West London and the Lead Research Midwife and Manager of the Women’s Health Research Centre at Imperial College.

Alison said: “The launch of the PAN-COVID study shows some of the NIHR research community at its best. The study team is grateful for all the contributions, creativity and collaboration that have allowed the study to get this far, so fast.

“An urgent public health study calls for this kind of action and we’re thankful for the research community’s recognition of the study’s importance.

“The pandemic comes with so much uncertainty for women and families and it’s great to think that this study will contribute to a better understanding of the virus in pregnancy and the neonate.”

Those working in the clinical community will benefit from weekly updates of the data, allowing them to adapt the care they are giving.
