Study finds tonsil removal is effective treatment for severe sore throats

Removing tonsils is both clinically and cost effective for adults suffering from recurrent severe sore throats, a study has found.

The NATTINA trial, led by researchers at Newcastle University, found participants who underwent tonsillectomy surgery reported 50% fewer sore throats over two years, compared to those who didn’t have the operation.

Over 450 participants across 34 sites were recruited nationally, including 21 patients recruited to the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford.
