Specialty lead wins critical care award
CRN South London Critical Care Specialty Group Lead (SGL) Dr Phil Hopkins has won a national award for his research activity.
The Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine (FICM) and NIHR Clinical Research Network (CRN) Awards aims to recognise NHS consultants, Specialty and Associate Specialist (SAS) doctors and trainee doctors who are active in research.
Phil, who is Research and Clinical Informatics Lead at King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, was awarded the Established Investigator Award at the FICM Board Meeting at Churchill House in London. He said:
“I am accepting the award on behalf of the entire Anaesthetics, Critical Care, Emergency Medicine and Trauma (ACET) Team, and my two collaborating leads Jeff Keep and Gudrun Kunst.
“This achievement is the culmination of ten years of very hard work across this team, and I was delighted for them. The honour is also really an acknowledgement of the fantastic work that our nurses at King's College Hospital have put in to over 50 portfolio studies; the output of which has transformed supportive care for critically ill patients.
“I would also like to thank the senior nurse delivery managers that I have worked with: Dan Hadfield, Georgina Parsons, Clair Harris and now Sinead Helyar. Without them I would not have won this award.”
The ACET Team were award winners at last year’s NIHR South London Clinical Research Awards.
Phil believes the secret to his success has been down to effective team working. He continued:
“The key to success is to make sure that research delivery teams integrate well with all staff in whichever hospital context people are working in. It is really important that research teams from across south London feel equally valued, and that we listen to all of them for ideas.
“We also need to show that research is answering questions that are truly important to patients, their families and the staff looking after them, and show direct linkage to improvements and changes to medical practice.
“Going forward I want to use the CRN South London Green Shoots’ initiative and whole portfolio to establish research delivery teams in all acute hospitals in the region and to try to work as one team to maximise delivery for the network. I would also like to extend academic opportunities to delivery nurses.”
CRN South London's Research Delivery Manager Nhlanhla Mguni said:

“He has developed a winning formula and has done a fantastic job in supporting critical care research teams throughout south London.”
