Skin condition study seeks volunteers

A new study is seeking 2,000 UK volunteers to chart their symptoms of psoriasis, a skin condition that causes flaky patches of skin, to try and help explain why one third develop arthritis.

The HIPPOCRATES Prospective Observational Study (HPOS) is looking for patients with psoriasis, but who aren't yet showing signs of psoriatic arthritis, to complete online questionnaires every 6 months to see how their condition changes over time. Psoriatic arthritis (PsA) is a long-term condition that causes joint pain, swelling and stiffness.

The University of Oxford’s Dr Laura Coates, pictured above, who is leading the study, said: “By following their psoriasis journey and any symptoms of arthritis we aim to be able to predict in future which patients are at greater risk of developing PsA and possibly do something to prevent it.”
