Seven Senior Nurses & Midwives Awarded Places on the 70@70 Leadership Programme

Seven senior nurses and midwives from across the North East and North Cumbria have been awarded places on the 70@70: NIHR Senior Nurse and Midwife Research Leader Programme.

Representing five different Trusts within the region, they will help to form a new community of senior clinical nurses and midwives who will champion the promotion of an embedded research active culture, encourage and support innovation, and inform research priorities in their organisations.

The 70@70 programme is for senior nurse and midwife clinical leaders with experience of building a research-led care environment for patients, and who have a record of developing existing practice and contributing to a research rich environment.

After submitting their applications in November last year, the following nurses and midwives were awarded places on the programme, making up the 70 successful applicants from across England:

  • Carly Brown, Lead Clinical Research Nurse, South Tyneside NHS Foundation Trust
  • Nicola Cunningham, Lead Cardiovascular Nurse, South Tees Hospital NHS Foundation Trust
  • Helen Howlett, Senior Research Nurse & Midwife, Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust
  • Louise Jones, Lead Community Nurse, Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust
  • Valentina Short, Nurse Consultant & Associate Clinical Director, Tees, Esk & Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust
  • Vikki Smith, NMAHP Research Clinical Academic, Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Senior Lecturer, Northumbria Uni
  • Linda Tinkler, Trust Lead for NMAHP Research, Education & Practice Development, Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

Professor Stephen Robson, Clinical Director at NIHR Clinical Research Network North East and North Cumbria (CRN NENC), said: “We are very pleased to have seven of our senior nurses and midwives awarded a place on the programme; this reflects the knowledge and experience within our regional workforce.

"With a range of roles and Trusts represented, this is a unique opportunity for our applicants to work together, further develop their leadership skills and deliver high quality, evidenced based practice through promoting research to NMAHPs across the North East and North Cumbria."

Clare Meachin, Associate Director of Nursing at the NIHR and 70@70 Programme Director, said: “The response to 70@70 has been amazing. The programme has proved extremely popular and it has been gratifying to see so many nurses and midwives share our excitement for the purpose of 70@70. The field was strong and the passion to innovate, improve future care and strengthen the research voice shone through.”

Sharon Dorgan, Senior Strategic Manager for CRN NENC, added: "I'd like to congratulate all seven of the candidates on successfully gaining a place on the leadership programme. To have so many representatives for the region selected, with such tough competition, is a real achievement. As a network, we are committed to the development of NMAHPs, this programme will help our applicants to strengthen the research influence and connections within our NHS partner organisations.

"We will follow each of our representatives with a close eye and ensure we provide them with any support to help them get the very most out of the leadership programme."

Through protected time, each applicant will be able to dedicate two days a week (over a period of three years) to foster a culture of innovation, with the ultimate goal of delivering high quality, evidenced based nursing, midwifery and healthcare practice.

A 70@70 launch event will take place in London on Thursday 9 May 2019, with Louise Wood, Director of Science, Research and Evidence, Department of Health and Social Care, confirmed as a keynote speaker.

We will be speaking with each of our seven 70@70 representatives in depth over the course of the programme, keeping you up-to-date with their progress, discovering what they hope to learn from the programme and the support they've been given.
