A new research study looking into support for people suffering from Long Covid has opened this week at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

The Long Covid Personalised Self-management support co-design and Evaluation (LISTEN) study will evaluate the effectiveness of a new self-management support programme, co-designed by people living with long Covid.

The study, funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR),  is conducted remotely, so people will be able to take part without a need for travel, as long as they are registered at a GP surgery in Sheffield.

Participants will be randomly selected into two groups, one receiving the LISTEN support package, which will involve digital resources and up to six, one-to-one video or telephone call support sessions, with the other group receiving their usual care.

The study is open to anyone over 18 who has been experiencing long Covid symptoms for 12 weeks or more.

People taking part in the study don’t need to have had a positive COVID-19 test but must have experienced one or more of the symptoms consistent with COVID-19, including ongoing fatigue, breathlessness, chest pain, “brain fog” or muscle pain.

Constance Kendall, Principle Investigator for the LISTEN study at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, said:

“Long Covid can impact on every aspect of a person's life. The LISTEN study seeks to understand how we can best support people by increasing their knowledge and confidence in managing everyday tasks.

“People living with Long Covid have helped to develop the support package and Sheffield Teaching Hospitals is proud to be involved in delivering this important study.”

The LISTEN study is now open for recruitment. For more information contact listen@cardiff.ac.uk or to take part in the study, visit www.listentrial.co.uk
