Record number of participants share their experience of taking part in research

A report published by the Clinical Research Network (CRN) West of England has shown that a record number of participants in the region have shared their experiences of taking part in research.

Participant feedback is really important in improving research delivery and ensuring the best possible experience is being provided. The research teams across the region have worked hard to ensure people taking part in research are given the opportunity to share their views. From the beginning of April 2021 until the end of March 2022, 2,332 people completed a Participant in Research Experience Survey (PRES), a 107% increase from 1,126 responses in 2020/21.

As in previous years, responses to the survey showed that the majority of participants in the West of England have a positive experience of taking part in research. 93% of respondents said they would consider taking part in research again and 176 respondents left a comment to say that they couldn’t think of anything that would have made their experience better.

In addition to the positive comments, 32% of respondents left feedback about what could have made their research experience better. These comments will be used to form projects which aim to improve the participant experience, in partnership with research champions and with research delivery staff

Ifan Jones, Chief Operating Officer for the CRN West of England said:

“I’m delighted to see such an increase in the number of participants who have shared feedback about their experience of taking part in research. I know this is largely due to research staff working hard to ensure as many people as possible are offered a PRES to complete.

“Whilst it’s great to see that the majority of participants have a positive experience of taking part in research, it’s also really important that we listen to those who have shared ways that they feel we can improve. At the CRN we are dedicated to providing the best possible experience for participants and we’ll be leading on projects based on their feedback that will help us to achieve this”.
