Professor Caroline Wroe announced as Clinical Director
NIHR Clinical Research Network North East and North Cumbria is pleased to announce Professor Caroline Wroe as Clinical Director.
Caroline has been appointed to the role commencing 1 October 2019. She has been a longstanding member of CRN NENC leadership, initially in the role of Specialty Group Lead for Renal and more recently as the Deputy Clinical Director since November 2018.
Caroline is a Consultant Nephrologist (kidney specialist) at South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and honorary Professor at Teesside University. She trained at Birmingham Medical School and completed her specialist training in the Northern Deanery. She holds a PhD from Newcastle University into the genetic causes of glomerulsclerosis (a common form of progressive scarring of the kidneys). She is a member of the Royal College of Physicians Edinburgh and in 2018 was awarded a fellowship to the Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management.
As a clinician her specialist interests are Living Kidney Donation (LKD) and the delivery of high quality research for health needs. Caroline is chair of the UK Living Kidney Donation network and represents the 48 non-transplanting Renal units in the UK on the NHS Blood and Transplant 2020 Strategic Implementation Group. In this role she has contributed to the setting and delivery of national strategy and guidelines.
Caroline is an experienced Principal Investigator (PI) and Chief Investigator (CI) for Investigator Initiated Trials (IITs). She was also Research and Innovation Director at South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
In addition to her NHS work Caroline is a committed chair of trustees for a national housing and homelessness charity (Oasis Community Housing). In this role she has knowledge and experience of working with the 3rd sector in leadership and governance.
