PRC: Leicester team expands with dedicated paediatric research nurse

Emily Badham childrens nurse PRC Leicester

In April 2022, Emily joined the PRC: Leicester team to help deliver commercial paediatric research studies. Emily has previously worked in the children’s emergency department and the neonatal unit at University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust, which hosts PRC: Leicester.

Emily explains: “The clinical areas I have previously worked in were research active, which I have always found really interesting. When I saw the opportunity for a dedicated children’s research nurse, I was excited!”

Paediatric research takes place in ‘Research Space’, which is a specialist research facility designed to be family-friendly.  Research Space is based at Leicester Royal Infirmary.

The research facilities offered include a patient waiting area with interactive floor projection, staffed reception, fully equipped consultation rooms that are split into an adults’ side and children’s side, a fully-equipped meeting/seminar room with hot-desk area and laboratory space with remotely monitored sample storage facilities. There is also a soft-furnished consent room for recruitment and consent discussions, with sensory equipment and access to play specialists to help children feel calm and relaxed.

When asked what Emily enjoys about her role, she explained: “I like how organised and structured research is, which it has to be. I enjoy that my role is varied and I like working with children – they have their own little personalities and can be very amusing - so you need to be flexible and work with them.”

PRC: Leicester has three paediatric studies in set up, which Emily is leading on. To find out more about our facilities, visit the dedicated life sciences industry page of the website: https://local.nihr.ac.uk/prc/leicester/industry/
