Portsmouth Hospitals named winners of two prestigious HSJ Awards
Teams and individuals at Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust (PHT) have been announced as winners of two prestigious Health Service Journal (HSJ) Awards, recognising their outstanding contribution to healthcare.
The Trust was also highly commended in two categories at the annual awards ceremony at Battersea Evolution Centre last week (Wednesday 6 November).
The HSJ Awards, now in their 39th year, are the largest annual recognition and benchmarking programme in the health sector, attracting hundreds of entries.
Professor Anoop Chauhan, Director of Research and Innovation, was named Clinical Leader of the Year at the HSJ Awards ceremony.
The judges recognised the exponential growth in research Prof Chauhan has driven at the Trust, highlighting his outstanding commitment and clinical excellence. As a research active respiratory physician with an international reputation, Prof Chauhan has brought together patients, industry innovators, commissioners and clinicians to improve the management of respiratory patients and has proactively worked to speed up the adoption and spread of new technology to benefit patients.
In the last decade, the number of patients recruited into clinical trials at PHT has increased from 1,000 in 2008/9 to more than 11,700 patients in 2018/19. PHT are ranked the top acute Trust in the country when the complexity of research projects is considered using criteria set by the National Institute of Healthcare Research (NIHR).
PHT continue to work closely with partners to use cutting edge science and technology to create real life tests and treatments that benefit patients more quickly. It is the Trust’s ambition that every patient who enters the hospital has the opportunity to take part in a clinical trial. The Modern Innovative Solutions to Improve Outcomes in Asthma, Breathlessness and COPD (MISSION ABC) project was announced as winner of the Acute Sector Innovation of the Year category.
MISSION ABC was shortlisted as a finalist in an impressive seven categories in total and was also highly commended in the Connecting Services and Information Award category and also in the Primary Care Innovation of the Year award category.
The project, developed by PHT’s dedicated research team, is a multidisciplinary care model delivering exceptional health outcomes in patients with asthma, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and breathlessness from a population of 27,853 patients with respiratory symptoms across 10 GP practices in Hampshire.
Prof Chauhan said: “These awards are a great recognition of the hard work and dedication of our team, who have developed and delivered this wonderful initiative, that has improved the lives of so many of our patients.
“On a personal level, to win HSJ Clinical Leader of the Year is very special. The award recognises the research journey I have been on with the many friends, family and patients who have been involved. Portsmouth is a special place, and we have a great hospital with an opportunity to do some wonderful things. We have a lot still to do, but before we start again, we will take a moment to pause and celebrate.”
The hospital management system Bedview, developed in-house by our IT Development Team to help improve visibility of patients’ journeys and flow through Queen Alexandra Hospital, was a finalist in the Driving Efficiency Through Technology category. The Trust was also shortlisted as a finalist for Freedom to Speak Up Organisation of the Year.
