Michael Visick has been announced as the new Chief Operating Officer of the NIHR Clinical Research Network South West Peninsula.

Michael, who has been leading a team at the Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust as the Research and Development Manager for 5 years, will succeed Dr Pauline McGlone who has been in the seconded role since November 2018.

Due to personal reasons, Dr McGlone made the decision not to continue as Chief Operating Officer at the end of the secondment period and will return to her former role as Deputy Chief Operating for the Clinical Research Network South West Peninsula.

Michael, who will take over leadership of the CRN SWP from August, said: “I would like to say a huge thank you to Pauline whose strategic leadership and vision over the past two years in her seconded role as Chief Operating Officer has seen the CRN SWP go from strength to strength under the most difficult and challenging circumstances. Personal circumstances have meant that Pauline has chosen not to continue in the COO role but I am delighted that she will remain in her substantive post as Deputy Chief Operating Officer and continue to support us all going forward.

“As for me, I am incredibly excited to have this opportunity and look forward to continuing with Pauline’s hard work ensuring the reputation of the CRN SWP as a leading research provider remains visible at all levels. I hope my passion and dedication for providing our patient population with the very best world class research opportunities combined with my knowledge and understanding of both the challenges and opportunities for our SWP partner organisations will mean that I can carry on with Pauline’s success.”

Michael brings a wealth of experience to the role having worked within research for 12 years in various roles and prior to that as a registered nurse in ITU and Non-Commissioned Officer within the British Army.

Dr McGlone said: “I want to thank all the organisations and the wider team for their support over the past two years.  It has been a challenging but very successful year for research and I am very  proud to have been part of that.  I am looking forward to supporting Mike in his new role and working collaboratively across the health and care system to support the region, its organisations and staff to continue to offer research opportunities to participants across the South West.”

Professor Michael Gibbons, NIHR CRN SWP Clinical Director, said: “I am exceptionally pleased to announce that we have appointed Michael Visick to the post of Chief Operating Officer, he brings a wealth of talent, experience and enthusiasm to the role.  I am very much looking forward to working closely with him.  I’d like to thank Dr Pauline McGlone for her dedication, commitment, and visionary approach to leadership in her time as Interim Chief Operating Officer; Having not applied for the Chief Operating Officer role, I am absolutely delighted that she has chosen to remain in the role of Deputy Chief Operating Officer.  We have an incredibly strong senior management team, I am so excited about working more with Michael and Pauline.”
