Local NHS health researchers celebrated at an annual awards event

Local NHS health researchers celebrated at an annual awards event

Chief Executives of NHS Trusts, researchers and patients came together to celebrate the innovative health and social care research taking place within our local NHS at the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Clinical Research Network Kent, Surrey and Sussex Awards.

Now in its third year, these awards recognise the achievement of individuals and research teams from across Kent, Surrey and Sussex. Winners came from NHS Trusts and Primary Care and showcased the diversity of research taking place in the region, and the opportunities open to patients and members of the public to be involved in research.

The awards were presented by John Sitzia Chief Operating Officer at the NIHR Clinical Research Network Coordinating Centre, Professor Geeta Menon, Clinical Director, NIHR Clinical Research Network Kent, Surrey and Sussex and Dr. Kate Jones, Chief Operating Officer NIHR Clinical Research Network Kent, Surrey and Sussex.

In 2018/19 more people than ever across Kent, Surrey and Sussex became involved with health research. Over 38,000 patients and healthy volunteers were given access to new and better treatments by being recruited into clinical research studies within our local NHS organisations.

Professor Geeta Menon, Clinical Director at the NIHR Clinical Research Network in Kent, Surrey and Sussex, said: "Congratulations to all the winners and nominees. Due to the hard work and dedication of our researchers, patients, carers and members of the public from across Kent, Surrey and Sussex have the opportunity to take part in important health and social care research.”

Dr. Kate Jones, Chief Operating Officer NIHR Clinical Research Network Kent, Surrey and Sussex said: “I would like to thank all our partners across Kent, Surrey and Sussex , whether winning an award or not, for their contribution to our research endeavours. It gives me great pleasure to recognise the achievements of our research community who continue to provide opportunities for patients and the public to participate in groundbreaking and innovative research which contributes to transformational improvements in care and treatments for everyone.”

Suzanne Rankin, Chief Executive, Ashford and St Peter's Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Chair of NIHR Clinical Research Network Kent, Surrey and Sussex Partnership Board said: "I would like to congratulate all the winners and nominees. Clinical research is vital in developing new treatments and approaches and continuously improving the quality and effectiveness of the care we give. Importantly it also stimulates innovation and growth, is a rewarding team activity and an effective vehicle for engaging and involving patients and the community. Regions like Kent, Surrey and Sussex have much to offer researchers, industry and innovators and it’s fantastic to see members of the team making such great developments and working with patients to realise transformational improvements in NHS treatments for everyone despite the considerable pressures on the NHS more generally. My thanks and admiration go to all those involved.”
