Key NIHR research participant survey for 2022/23 launches today

The Participant in Research Experience Survey (PRES) for 2022/23 launches today!

As part of improving the research experience of those who take part in research, we approach patients and their carers on an ongoing basis, asking them to tell us about their experience of taking part in a research study; both the good and the not-so-great.

The PRES is a key tool to help NHS trusts and other research sites improve the research experience for participants, by acting on their feedback from the survey.

In 2020/21, the most recent data available, more than 2,300 PRES responses were submitted by adults, while 80 came from children.

This year, PRES comes in four categories: adults, 0-6 years, 7-11 years and 12-15 years.

In 2022/23, there are more ways than ever for research sites to get involved in PRES. As well as all the surveys being available online, CRN North Thames will also send out stick-and-fold surveys and postcards containing survey links to research sites.

The responsibility for disseminating PRES falls to PRES Leads, who work at sites to give research participants the opportunity to complete the survey and act as a link between the site and CRN North Thames.

Neeta Patel, who acts in the role for Barts Health NHS Trust, said: “At Barts Health, we've implemented several changes in response to PRES feedback, to improve the overall experience for anyone who takes part in our studies in the future.”

Ben Sartoris, PRES Lead at Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust, added: "Being part of PRES allowed us to identify and improve our service for the benefit of our patients, based on the experiences of those who have participated so far."

Dr Sharon Barrett, Chief Operating Officer at CRN North Thames, said: “PRES is a key measure of the satisfaction of those taking part in research but is also vital as a guide to research colleagues as to how they might improve the research experience in the future.

“We profoundly thank all those who take the time to deliver PRES in our region, as well as all those who take the time to complete the survey. We are hoping for a bumper year for responses this year!”
