International Nurses Day: working on the PANORAMIC COVID-19 treatment study

Sue George is a clinical research nurse at Milton Keynes University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. To celebrate International Nurses Day (12 May), she talks about her experience working on the PANORAMIC study into antiviral treatments for COVID-19.

Working on PANORAMIC was my first experience working with the NIHR Clinical Research Network Thames Valley and South Midlands. I wondered how I was going to fit into the team - nurses from the network area and me? I didn’t have all the IT skills that fitted with others, yet with the teamwork, excellent communications and reactive managers who set good directions, listening and developing management strategies that included staff's thoughts, I soon felt I was able to support the fantastic study which had rapid participation from our amazing British public!

Working remotely has been needed. While the calls may seem repetitive, each is an individual call where assessment skills are required to ensure the best for that participant. As a team member, I have seen how, and felt confident that, any concerns raised are addressed, actioned and resolved within a very short space of a day. How good is that for participant care and participant experience?

Because in essence, that is what we do best; care about the delivery and recruitment to a study, because the participants have cared enough to want to consent to help try and find an answer.

I have been part of a great team that has seen its first participants turn into 25,801 - how good is that?
