Infant vaccine study launched in the South West

Vaccine v1 0 web

The NIHR CRN South West Peninsula would like to invite you and your baby to take part in a study of a new vaccine which protects against four types of meningitis.

What is the study about?

Meningitis is an infection of the protective surface that surrounds the brain and spinal cord (meninges). It can affect anyone, but is most common in babies, young children, teenagers and young adults.

Meningitis can be very serious if not treated quickly. It can cause life-threatening blood poisoning (septicaemia) and result in permanent damage to the brain or nerves. This is why preventing the disease by vaccination is so important.

All babies normally receive a vaccine against meningitis type B (MenB) as part of the UK vaccination schedule. The new vaccine (MenACYW) aims to protect against additional meningitis types A, C, Y and W.

Who can take part?

If your baby is aged around 2 months (between 56 - 89 days old) and has not yet received routine infant vaccinations you would be eligible to take part.

Where can I take part?

This study is currently open within the NHS in:

  • Penzance, Cornwall
  • Torpoint, Cornwall
  • Exeter, Devon
  • Plymouth (and surrounding areas), Devon
  • Taunton, Somerset
