Greater Manchester confirms 2019/20 Advanced Leadership Programme cohort

A new intake of Greater Manchester colleagues has been selected for the NIHR CRN Advanced Leadership Programme (ALP).

The scheme is designed for research staff ready to lead change across the entire NIHR Clinical Research Network.

Following a competitive application process, three successful applicants were selected by a regional panel for CRN Greater Manchester (CRN GM) for Cohort 4.

The cohort consists of: Brenda Pimlott from Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust, Imelda Mayor from Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust, and Kathryn Cawley from the CRN GM.

The programme aims to develop the leadership skills of staff managing and supporting frontline research delivery to ensure the CRN is equipped to face the challenges and opportunities which lie ahead.

The programme takes place over a 12 month period, from September 2019 to August 2020, and is focused on translating leading edge thinking drawn from a wide range of fields of enquiry into impactful practice.

At the heart of the ALP is an approach which combines workplace and external learning, with a strong emphasis on collaboration with peers and leaders from across our networks.

About the GM cohort:

  • Brenda Pimlott is a Senior Research Coordinator in the Innovation and Research department at Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust. She works on both physical and mental health research projects. More recently she has supported mental health research related to dementia and psychological therapies.
  • Imelda Mayor is a Clinical Research Sister/Junior Sister in the Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at St Mary’s Hospital, part of Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust. The NICU research team works to ensure babies benefit from cutting edge research and families have the option to participate in studies.
  • Kathryn Cawley recently moved to the Clinical Research Network Greater Manchester delivery team as a Team Lead Research Nurse working across adult studies in secondary care. She joined CRN GM from the Acute Research Delivery Team at Salford Royal.

Initially, learning on the ALP is focused around structured modules led by subject experts. As participants progress, the focus shifts to application of this learning to a work-based leadership challenge.

There is a strong emphasis on personal development throughout, with each candidate’s line manager and the LCRN workforce lead providing ongoing support. Face-to-face events in every month of the programme are expanded upon through learning with peers in online settings, and the individual’s personal learning and development.
