Dorchester's first Building Research Partnerships event heralded a great success
Members of the public and researchers have gathered in Dorset to discuss the importance of patient and public involvement in health research. The event, called Building Research Partnerships (BRP), took place at Kingston Maurward on 26 November 2019.
Hosted by Dorset County Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (DCH) and the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), the event promoted the positive impact of patient and public involvement in research and outlined ways for the public to get involved and help shape the health and care landscape.
More than 50 people attended, including members of the public, health researchers and members of the Research and Innovation team at DCH. Attendees enjoyed presentations from invited speakers, who discussed a wide range of topics from the role of Patient Research Ambassadors at DCH, to how members of the public can play a part in deciding which areas of health and care should be prioritised for research. The event received positive feedback, with 94% of attendees stating that they would recommend the event to others. One attendee described BRP as, "A very enjoyable day that has ignited my interest in
research."

Kelly Adams, local Workforce Development Lead for the NIHR, said, “We’re keen to promote the benefits of patient and public involvement in research because it leads to research that meets their needs, is more reliable and more likely to be put into practice.
“The Building Research Partnerships event provided a great opportunity for us to bring researchers and the public together to discuss the areas of health research that matter to them most. We’d like to thank everyone who came along and supported the event, as well as all those involved in its organisation.”
Zoe Sheppard, Head of Research at DCH, added: “We were thrilled by the success of the Building Research Partnerships event with so many attendees who weren’t put off by the weather, with 98% of attendees reporting an increased understanding of patient and public involvement in research, and 90% reporting that the event increased their likelihood of taking part in a research study.
