Members of the CRN Wessex core team attended equality, diversity and inclusion training this month.

The training was delivered by Roy Ward, Equality and Inclusion Project Officer from the NIHR Clinical Research Network Coordinating Centre.

Roy began the Zoom training session with a short traffic light activity to assess the teams’ personal comfortability of EDI. Most of the team reported that they don’t feel completely confident about how to meeti the needs of under-served communities, highlighting the importance of understanding an individual or community before assuming the best way to engage with them.

He then went on to explain the protected characteristics as listed in the UK Equality Act 2010 and encouraged the team to approach the legislation more broadly. Roy explained that it is good practice to consider those who may not traditionally sit under those categories but could still be discriminated against.

Team members gave positive feedback about the whole session but particularly enjoyed a special final presentation given by Roy about the LGBTQ+ community as part of Pride Month.

Leanne Sheill, Communications and Engagement Officer, said: “I learnt a lot from Roy’s training but took home a lot from the LGBTQ+ presentation. I’m looking forward to putting it into practice by actively considering language such as pronouns in my work.”

Staff at CRN Wessex plan to establish an EDI working group with partners in the region to ensure it remains at the forefront of the organisation’s priorities.
