CRN Greater Manchester appoints new Specialty Lead for Infectious Disease

Senior specialty doctor in Infectious Diseases Alison Uriel has been appointed as the NIHR Clinical Research Network Greater Manchester Specialty Lead for Infectious Diseases.

Dr Uriel, who has worked at North Manchester General Hospital since 2009, takes over the role from her colleague Professor Andy Ustianowski, who recently became joint NIHR CRN National Specialty Lead for Infection.

She previously spent seven years at the Division of Liver Diseases, Mount Sinai Hospital, New York, in hepatitis B, hepatitis C and HIV research.

As well as her clinical duties at North Manchester, she is involved in trials of new HIV and viral hepatitis therapies, and, most recently, studies evaluating potential treatments for COVID-19 infection.

Her interests include management of viral hepatitis in pregnancy, improving viral hepatitis education and screening in migrant and refugee communities. She also chairs the Greater Manchester Viral Hepatitis Strategy: Migrants and Ethnic Groups sub group.
