Continuous improvement focus of pan-London/Kent,Surrey and Sussex meeting

north thames continuous improvement event

Delegates from across London and the south east came together to discuss ways to continually improve research in healthcare at an event joined hosted by the three London Clinical Research Networks and CRN Kent, Surrey, Sussex.

The event, held at Guy’s Hospital in south London on 18 October, saw a varied agenda of talks in the morning, followed by a series of ‘world café’ style events in the afternoon.

Following a welcome from CRN representatives, Anthea Mould, Head of Allied Health Professionals/Pharmacy and Continuous Improvement (CI) at the CRN Coordinating Centre (CC) gave attendees an overview of past and future CI projects at the CC.

This was followed by healthcare improvement programmes consultant, Vikki Pearce, who shared some service improvement models and case studies. To close the morning, Sam Thomas, Programme Manager of Improvement at the Health Foundation, spoke on bringing patients and the public into the design and delivery of healthcare.

During the afternoon world café sessions, delegates were given the opportunity to learn about various aspects of the CRNs’ work, including the Study Support Service, Workforce Development, Industry and Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement, among others.

Tania Page, Research Delivery Manager at CRN North Thames, who co-organised the event with the Continuous Improvement leads from the three other networks involved, said: “We covered a wide spectrum of issues on the theme of Continuous Improvement, and the attendees were enthusiastic, bringing their own ideas to the gathering.

“Hopefully everyone came away from the day having learned something valuable.”

Andra Cosma, Research Delivery Manager for Division 4 and CRN South London's Interim Continuous Improvement Lead, was involved in promoting the event and finding presenters to showcase their projects. She said:

“The event went really well and I’d like to say thank you to everyone who attended. Continuous Improvement is so important because we should all be looking at what we are doing in research, and thinking about how we can evolve to meet the future needs of our patients.

“We want everyone to be thinking about CI all year round and to make it a permanent part of their daily practice. The South East Cluster Continuous Improvement Hub platform gives people the opportunity to network and to share best practice with others.”

This was the third year the event has taken place and there are already plans to hold another event next year.
