Celebrating International Clinical Trials Day 2020

We celebrate International Clinical Trials Day (ICTD) on May 20th every year. It’s a great opportunity to spread the word about research to patients, carers, the public and healthcare professionals. And to give thanks to those working and volunteering in research.

The NIHR Be Part of Research campaign was due to coincide with ICTD. But the COVID-19 outbreak means this year’s campaign has been postponed.

Events were planned across North West London to promote the NIHR’s resources, including the Be Part of Research website. Instead, we will join the wider NIHR teams in using our online channels to spread the word and give thanks.

ICTD celebrates the anniversary of what is thought to be the first clinical trial, by James Lind in 1747. He looked into the causes of scurvy on board the HMS Salisbury, grouping 12 men into pairs and giving them different dietary supplements. He found the group eating fruit showed the most improvement.

Celebrating ICTD is a great opportunity to promote research, which can still happen online. Take a look and share our posts on TwitterLinkedIn and Facebook on International Clinical Trials Day.

Further details about the Be Part of Research campaign will be released at a later date.
