Antibiotics do not reduce early COVID-19 recovery time, study finds

Two commonly used antibiotics do not reduce recovery time for COVID-19 patients in the community, a study has found.

The PRINCIPLE trial examined whether azithromycin and doxycycline could help people with early stage COVID-19 recover more quickly at home or prevent the need for hospital admission.

Interim analyses of data concluded there is no beneficial effect in patients aged over 50. More than 190 people took part in the study in Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Milton Keynes and Oxfordshire.
