Introduction
Say “thank you” to colleagues who don’t work in a formal research role but have supported your research, by nominating them for a NIHR Clinical Research Network Kent, Surrey and Sussex Research Support Award.
We know our researchers do a fantastic job delivering research to advance patient care. We also know there are many unsung heroes who work in areas unrelated to research – for example HR, finance, photography, blood screening – but who provide invaluable support to our research delivery. Many of these colleagues don’t realise the impact of their contribution to research.
Who is eligible for the award?
- People nominated for an award must NOT work in a research role/ CRN funded post (as a researcher or in research delivery, including R&D teams; Chief Investigators or Principal Investigators)
- Nominations can be made for teams and individuals
- Nominations must be for support provided as part of their, or their team’s normal NHS or employment responsibilities
- Nominees - individuals or teams - must be employed by an organisation within the CRN Kent, Surrey and Sussex region at the time of nomination
- The nomination statement must highlight how the person or team has contributed to research within the last two years (January 2021 to December 2022)
- If you work for the NHS you can nominate clinical and non-clinical colleagues
- If you work in a non-NHS setting you can nominate anyone who helps with research activity
Who can nominate?
Anyone involved in research delivery can nominate a colleague or team.
How to nominate
Nominations can be made online using one of two forms, or you can email your nominations directly to crnkentsurreysussex@nihr.ac.uk.
There are separate nomination forms depending if the person or team you are nominating is based within an NHS Trust, a Primary Care or a non-NHS or out-of-hospital setting (for example: local government, care home, hospice).
Please explain in 100 to 500 words how the person or team you are nominating has provided support which has contributed to the successful delivery of health and care research. Reasons you might want to nominate your colleagues could include:
- providing flexible support
- going above and beyond their role to help you with research activity
- removing barriers
- providing administrative or logistical support
- communicating with patients and supporting patient recruitment
- showing an exceptional level of initiative, skill and commitment to research within their role
- demonstrate research is core part of the service

Closing date
The deadline for nominations is 11.59pm Friday 13 January 2023.
What do nominees receive?
If the nominee works for an NHS Trust, they will receive a printed certificate and a copy of their nomination which will be sent to their organisation’s Research and Development Manager/department to distribute.
If the nominee works in Primary Care, or in a non-NHS, or out-of-hospital setting, the person making the nomination will choose how the person or team will receive the certificate.
Overall winners
One Research Support Award winner and one highly commended nominee will be selected from each Trust type in our region - acute, community, mental health, primary care and ambulance - and from a Primary Care organisation, and a non-NHS or out-of-hospital organisation.
Winners will receive £500 for their organisation and those who receive a Highly commended will receive £250 for their organisation to spend on promoting research and research activity.
The winners will be decided by a judging panel consisting of NIHR and public representatives from around the region.
