Case study: 'I took part in research to protect my friends and family' - Luke's research story

What made you decide to take part?

The pandemic has had a massive impact on everyone, as a uni student my whole uni experience and course has been impacted and I was keen to do anything I could to help researchers find a vaccine so that life can go back to normal. I have friends and family members that are vulnerable so wanted to do something that would help to protect them in the future. It's also good to think that I may have had a Covid vaccine, months before I would be eligible for the actual vaccine.

How did you find your experience?

I've never done anything like this before so it was a new experience for me but it was exciting to be part of such an important trial. The study visits have been quite straightforward, it was clear what was required and everyone was really nice. The study team explained everything well and I have written information which explains all aspects of the study. I know that if I have any questions, someone will be able to answer them.

What would you say to someone thinking about taking part in research?

I would say if you get the chance to take part in a research study then you should definitely do it. It may not benefit you directly but it will certainly be helping people in the future. It's good to know that you are making a difference and helping researchers to develop medicines of the future. Hopefully this vaccine will be successful and many lives will be saved as a result. It's not everyday you get a chance to save lives.
